About Richie Ashburn

Ashburn broke into pro ball in 1945 with the Utica Blue Sox, where manager Eddie Sawyer converted him from catcher to center fielder and teammates hung the nickname "Whitey" on him for his blond hair. He reached the Phillies in 1948 and started that summer's All-Star Game as a 21-year-old rookie, then spent 12 seasons anchoring Philadelphia's outfield and leadoff spot. A pure spray hitter who finished with 2,574 hits against 29 home runs, he won NL batting titles in 1955 and 1958 and piled up more hits than anyone in baseball during the 1950s. His relay throw that nailed Cal Abrams at the plate on the last day of 1950 set up Dick Sisler's pennant-winning homer for the "Whiz Kids." Ted Williams dubbed him "Putt-Putt" for legs that seemed to have twin motors, and his glove was just as famous — his 5,803 putouts rank third among center fielders, behind only Willie Mays and Tris Speaker. Dealt to the Cubs after the 1959 season, Ashburn anchored Chicago's outfield in 1960-61 — the seasons pictured on this Topps card — before closing his career with the 1962 Mets. The Veterans Committee inducted him into the Hall of Fame in 1995.
