About Frank Baumann
A left-handed pitcher nicknamed "Beau" by Boston owner Tom Yawkey after he signed out of St. Louis for a $90,000 bonus in 1952, Frank Baumann is shown on card No. 306 with the Chicago White Sox, who acquired him from the Red Sox that November in a trade for Ron Jackson. Army service during the Korean War delayed his big-league debut to 1955, when he opened with 5⅔ scoreless relief innings for Boston. 1960, the year this card captures, was his best: pitching for the defending AL champion White Sox, he went 13-6 in 47 games and led all American League hurlers with a 2.67 ERA. His effectiveness faded afterward — a rough 1961 followed, and arm trouble limited him to mop-up work by 1964 — before the crosstown Cubs gave him a final look in 1965. Baumann closed an 11-year career at 45-38 with a 4.11 ERA and 384 strikeouts, then returned to St. Louis, where he died in 2020 at age 87.
