About Bob Lillis
Robert Perry Lillis broke into pro ball in June 1951, signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers for a reported $15,000 out of USC, where he'd starred for coach Rod Dedeaux after a season at Pasadena City College. A slick-fielding shortstop, he lined into freak triple plays in back-to-back minor-league seasons — Newport News in 1951, Elmira in 1952 — before spending eight years buried behind Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese in the Dodgers' system. He debuted with Los Angeles on August 17, 1958, but with Maury Wills entrenched at short, Lillis worked mostly as a utility infielder, the role he's shown in on his 1960 Topps card, #354. Traded to St. Louis in mid-1961, he was selected by Houston in that fall's expansion draft and became an original Colt .45, anchoring the infield for six seasons and finishing a ten-year career with a .236 average over 817 games. He later managed the Astros from 1982-85, going 276-261, and coached for the Giants through 1996.
