About Bill White
Bill White's card #355 catches him in his second full season as the St. Louis Cardinals' first baseman, a year before he authored some of his career's most remarkable feats. Signed by the New York Giants out of Hiram College in 1953, White reached the majors on May 7, 1956, homering in his first big-league at-bat, then lost 1957 to military service before St. Louis acquired him in a March 1959 trade. He blossomed into an eight-time All-Star (1959-61, 1963-64) and a seven-time Gold Glove winner at first base (1960-66). On August 14, 1960, White hit for the cycle, and the following July he tied Ty Cobb's 49-year-old record with 14 hits across consecutive doubleheaders. He anchored the Cardinals' 1964 World Series championship club, finishing third in NL MVP voting that year. Dealt to Philadelphia in the trade that also sent Dick Groat and Bob Uecker east, White closed his playing career back in St. Louis in 1969. He went on to become the first Black play-by-play announcer for a major-league team, calling Yankees broadcasts for 18 years, and in 1989 was elected the first Black president of a major professional sports league, serving as National League president until 1994.
