About Joe Amalfitano

John Joseph Amalfitano was born January 23, 1934, in San Pedro, California, and starred at St. Anthony High School in Long Beach before attending Loyola of Los Angeles and USC. He signed with the New York Giants as a bonus-rule player in 1954, which kept him glued to the big-league bench rather than developing in the minors, and it took four more minor-league seasons before he re-established himself. Amalfitano returned to the National League with the San Francisco Giants in 1960, the season pictured on this card, and went on to log ten big-league seasons as an infielder with the Giants (1954-55, 1960-61, 1963), Houston Colt .45s (1962), and Chicago Cubs (1964-67), batting .244 with 418 hits. He later managed the Cubs (1979-81) and spent sixteen seasons as the Los Angeles Dodgers' third-base coach, sharing in their 1988 World Series title, before returning to the Giants organization for three decades as a roving infield instructor, retiring in January 2021 just shy of his 87th birthday.
