About Al Schroll
Al "Bull" Schroll, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right-hander out of Tulane University and New Orleans, broke in with the Boston Red Sox in 1958 after signing with the club in 1951 and grinding through seven minor-league seasons, including a league-leading 2.07 ERA for Albany in 1954. He shuttled between Boston and the Philadelphia Phillies in 1959, picking up his first big-league win in relief against Cincinnati and later firing a complete-game six-hitter over Cleveland. That December, Boston sent him to the Chicago Cubs in a trade for 1951 pennant hero Bobby Thomson — the deal behind his 1960 Topps Cubs card (#357). Schroll made the Opening Day roster but worked just 2 2/3 innings before Chicago sold him to Triple-A Houston in May. He resurfaced with the Minnesota Twins in their inaugural 1961 season, making eight starts, then finished his career in the Twins' farm system. Nicknamed "Bull" for his rugged build, he died in 1999 at 67.
