About Joe DeMaestri

Joe DeMaestri broke into pro ball in Boston's system in 1947 and reached the majors with the White Sox in 1951 via the 1950 Rule 5 draft. A San Francisco native and Tamalpais High School product, he spent 1952 with the Browns before settling in as the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics' regular shortstop for seven seasons, making the 1957 All-Star team and leading American League shortstops in fielding percentage in both 1957 and 1958. On July 8, 1955, he went 6-for-6, all singles, against Detroit, the 34th six-hit game in major-league history. In December 1959 he was part of the trade sending Roger Maris to New York, the club shown on his 1960 Topps card (#358). Backing up Tony Kubek in the 1960 World Series, DeMaestri singled off Joe Gibbon in Game Two and took over at short in Game Seven after Kubek was hit in the throat by a bad-hop grounder, though he was off the field an inning later for Mazeroski's walk-off homer. He won a second ring in 1961 before retiring to run his family's beer distributorship in Marin County.
