1960 Topps #359 Buddy Gilbert

About Buddy Gilbert
Drew Edward "Buddy" Gilbert broke into pro ball with Cincinnati in 1954, signing for a $5,000 bonus after a tryout at Crosley Field. A 6-foot-3 outfielder out of Knoxville, Tennessee, and the University of Tennessee, he spent eight seasons in the Reds' system, highlighted by a .282 average, 24 home runs and 84 RBI for the 1959 Nashville Vols. That performance earned him a September call-up, and he appeared in seven games for Cincinnati, six of them in right field. Gilbert went 3-for-20, with both of his career homers -- solo shots off Pittsburgh's Jim Umbricht and Dick Hall -- coming in his final two games. He drew praise for his powerful throwing arm, once outgunning future Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente in a contest. A salary dispute with GM Gabe Paul cost him a shot at the 1960 roster, and he closed out his career in the minors before building a banking and real estate career in Knoxville. His 1960 Topps card #359 is recognized as his rookie card.
