About Herb Score

Herb Score signed with Cleveland on his 19th birthday in 1952 out of Lake Worth, Florida, and by 1954 was The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year. He debuted with the Indians in 1955 and was an instant sensation, going 16-10 with a rookie-record 245 strikeouts to win American League Rookie of the Year and the first of two straight All-Star nods; in 1956 he improved to 20-9 with a 2.53 ERA, again leading the league in strikeouts. Scouts compared the hard-throwing lefty to Bob Feller. On May 7, 1957, a Gil McDougald line drive struck Score in the face, fracturing bones near his eye and ending his season; he pitched on through 1962 with Cleveland and the White Sox but was never the same, finishing 17-26 after the injury against 38-20 before it. His 1960 Topps card still pictures him in Cleveland flannels, the uniform he wore when he set the league on its ear. Score later broadcast Indians games for 34 years and entered the Cleveland Indians Hall of Fame in 2006.
