About Bob Oldis
Bob Oldis spent fifteen years in pro ball as a defense-first backup catcher. Signed out of a Florida tryout camp in 1949, he reached the majors with the Washington Senators in 1953, shuttling between Washington and the minors through 1955. Three Triple-A seasons in the Yankees' system followed before the Pittsburgh Pirates took him in the November 1959 Rule 5 draft. In 1960 Oldis was Pittsburgh's third catcher behind Smoky Burgess and Hal Smith, appearing in 22 regular-season games, then entering Games Four and Five of the World Series as a defensive replacement — no at-bats, but a champion's share when the Pirates stunned the Yankees on Bill Mazeroski's Game Seven walk-off homer. He closed his playing days with the Phillies in 1962-63, collecting his only home run off Pete Richert, then built a long second career as a coach and scout, winning a second World Series ring with the 2003 Florida Marlins. His 1960 Topps card, #361, lists his birth year as 1930; he was actually born in 1928.
