About Russ Kemmerer

Russ Kemmerer broke into pro ball in June 1950, signing with the Red Sox for a $3,000 bonus after earning all-city honors in football, basketball, and baseball at Pittsburgh's Peabody High. The right-hander debuted for Boston in 1954 and threw a one-hit shutout of Baltimore in his first big-league start at Fenway Park, drawing praise from his boyhood idol, Ted Williams. Traded to Washington in April 1957, Kemmerer became a regular starter for the Senators, the club pictured on this card, going 21-45 over three-plus seasons before Washington sold him to the defending AL champion White Sox in May 1960. He pitched for Chicago and the expansion Houston Colt .45s, finishing a nine-year career in 1963 with a 43-59 record, 4.46 ERA and 505 strikeouts. Kemmerer left the game for the Methodist ministry and teaching, coaching baseball 21 years at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, where students dubbed him "Special K." He co-authored a 2002 book on his friendship with Williams, "Hey Kid, Just Get It Over the Plate!"
