About Don Larsen
Don Larsen signed with the St. Louis Browns for an $850 bonus after starring in baseball and basketball at San Diego's Point Loma High School, debuting in the majors in 1953. Traded to the New York Yankees in a 17-player deal after the 1954 season, the hard-partying right-hander earned the nickname "Gooney Bird" from teammates for his gangly build and after-hours antics. On October 8, 1956, Larsen delivered the most famous single game in World Series history, retiring all 27 Brooklyn Dodgers he faced in Game 5 for the only perfect game — and the only no-hitter — in Fall Classic history, earning World Series MVP and the Babe Ruth Award. He won two championships with New York (1956, 1958). On December 11, 1959, the Yankees sent Larsen to the Kansas City Athletics along with Hank Bauer, Norm Siebern, and Marv Throneberry in the trade that brought Roger Maris to New York — the deal pictured on his 1960 Topps card. Larsen lost 10 of 11 decisions in Kansas City and was optioned to the minors that July, one stop in a nomadic 15-year career (81-91, 3.78 ERA) that closed with the 1967 Cubs.
