About Bob Turley
Robert Lee Turley signed with the St. Louis Browns for a $600 bonus the day after his 1948 East St. Louis, Illinois, high school graduation. The hard-throwing right-hander debuted in 1951, served two years in the Army, and returned to the club after it became the Baltimore Orioles, leading the American League in strikeouts in 1954. That November he became the centerpiece of a record 17-player trade sending him, Don Larsen, and Billy Hunter to the New York Yankees. In Baltimore he'd earned the nickname "Bullet Bob" after Look magazine clocked his fastball at 98 mph with a bullet timer from the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. In pinstripes from 1955-1962 he made three All-Star teams and helped New York to five pennants, peaking in 1958 with a 21-7 record, the AL wins title, the Cy Young Award, and World Series MVP honors after saving Game Six and winning Game Seven in relief as the Yankees rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Milwaukee. His 1960 Topps card catches him fresh off a 9-3 season that included a Game Seven start against Pittsburgh that October. He closed his career with the Angels and Red Sox in 1963, finishing 101-85 lifetime, then co-founded the insurance firm that became Primerica.
