About Gene Green
Gene Leroy Green broke into pro ball in 1952, signing with the St. Louis Cardinals and spending six years in their farm system before a September 1957 call-up. He stayed with St. Louis through 1959, setting career bests with a .281 average and 13 home runs in 137 games in 1958 while splitting time between right field and catcher. Traded to the Orioles that December, Green appears with Baltimore on his 1960 Topps card (#269), though the club left him at Triple-A most of that season, calling him up for a single September start in right field. Selected by the expansion Washington Senators in 1961, he set career highs with 18 home runs, 62 RBI and a .489 slugging mark. That October he was traded to Cleveland, along with ERA champion Dick Donovan, for outfielder Jimmy Piersall. Green finished his seven-year, five-team career with the Indians and Reds in 1963, totaling 46 home runs and a .267 average, and died in St. Louis in 1981 at age 47.
