About Al Worthington

Al Worthington broke into pro ball in 1951, signed for $1,500 after a Birmingham railroad man recommended him to the Southern Association's Nashville Volunteers, and the Giants bought his contract in 1953. He introduced himself to the majors in historic fashion, throwing back-to-back shutouts in his first two starts -- a two-hitter over the Phillies and a four-hitter over the Dodgers -- one of only a handful of pitchers to open a career that way. He helped New York capture the 1954 pennant and world championship, drawing a Series share while watching Willie Mays's famous catch from the bench. Through 1959 he evolved from Giants starter into swingman and closer, prized for what one teammate called an "elegant slider." Traded to the Red Sox that March, just after this Topps card locked in his final San Francisco season, he later walked off the White Sox in September on principle, objecting to the club's sign-stealing. He rebuilt his career with the Twins, saving 21 games and helping Minnesota to the 1965 American League pennant.
