About Jim Marshall
A left-handed-hitting first baseman out of the Pacific Coast League, where he led the PCL in home runs and RBIs for Oakland in 1954, Marshall debuted with the Baltimore Orioles in 1958 before finishing that season with the Chicago Cubs. His best big-league year came in 1959, when he set career highs of 11 home runs and 40 RBIs for Chicago. That November the Cubs traded him and pitcher Dave Hillman to Boston for Dick Gernert — the deal pictured on his 1960 Topps card — but Marshall never played a game for the Red Sox. On March 16, 1960, Boston shipped him to Cleveland for Russ Nixon; when that trade was voided, the Red Sox instead sent him to the San Francisco Giants for Al Worthington four days later. He filled in capably for Willie McCovey at first base that summer, then closed his five-year, five-team major-league career with the Mets and Pirates in 1962 before playing three seasons in Japan. Marshall later managed the Cubs (1974-76) and Athletics (1979).
