1960 Topps #405 Bobby Richardson

New York Yankees · American League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #405 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Bobby Richardson

Robert Clinton Richardson Jr. signed with the Yankees straight out of Sumter, South Carolina's Edmunds High School in 1953, turning down college scholarships, and debuted in the majors on August 5, 1955. He won the everyday second-base job in 1959 and held it through 1966, forming a slick double-play partnership with roommate Tony Kubek; the pair's clean-living habits — no drinking, smoking, or late nights — earned them the nickname "the Milkshake Twins" from teammates. An eight-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner (1961-65), Richardson led the American League with 209 hits in 1962, then ended that year's World Series by catching Willie McCovey's line drive for the Series-clinching final out. In 1960 he hit .367 with 12 RBI against Pittsburgh to become the only World Series MVP ever chosen from the losing team. Still only 31, he retired after 1966 to focus on his family and Christian ministry work, later coaching South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and Liberty. Richardson is not in the Hall of Fame. His 1960 Topps card, #405 in the high-number Series 5 run, is found with both white and gray back stock, with the white-back version the scarcer of the two.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
