1960 Topps #315 Bobby Shantz

About Bobby Shantz
Bobby Shantz signed with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1948 and reached the majors in 1949, developing into a crafty left-hander who worked hitters with curves, changeups and, from 1951 on, a knuckleball. Standing just 5-foot-6, he defied scouts who considered him too small for the mound, winning the 1952 American League Most Valuable Player Award after leading the league with 24 wins and a 2.48 ERA for Philadelphia. Arm and wrist injuries limited him through 1953-56, and Kansas City traded him to the Yankees before 1957, where he was reborn as a top reliever, leading the AL in ERA (2.45) that season. He helped New York win the 1958 World Series and pitched in relief in both the 1957 and 1960 Fall Classics, the run pictured on this 1960 issue. Shantz also won all eight Gold Gloves awarded to pitchers from 1957-1964, considered by contemporaries the finest fielding pitcher of his generation. He finished his 16-year career, which closed in 1964 back in Philadelphia, at 119-99 with a 3.38 ERA and three All-Star selections.
