1960 Topps #314 Chico Fernandez

About Chico Fernandez
Humberto "Chico" Fernández broke in with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1956, unable to unseat Hall of Famer Pee Wee Reese despite three strong Triple-A seasons at Montreal. The Dodgers gave him the nickname "Chico" in the low minors, telling him it would be easier for Americans to pronounce. Traded to the Phillies in April 1957, he became Philadelphia's first Black player and its regular shortstop for three seasons. Detroit acquired him in December 1959, and he anchored the position through 1962, a slick-fielding, daring baserunner who often clashed with his managers. On July 4, 1961, at Yankee Stadium, he stole home in a ninth-inning tie to spark a Tigers win. In 1962 he set career highs with 20 home runs and 59 RBIs. This 1960 Topps card, #314, captures his first season in a Tigers uniform. He closed out an eight-year career in 1963 with the Mets, finishing with 666 hits, 40 homers, and a .240 average. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
