About Turk Lown
Omar Joseph "Turk" Lown signed with the Dodgers out of Brooklyn's sandlots in 1942, then had his career interrupted by World War II, where he was wounded at the Battle of the Bulge and awarded the Purple Heart. He reached the majors in 1951 with the Chicago Cubs, but wildness limited him as a starter until Los Angeles' Pacific Coast League club converted him to relief in 1954, remaking his career. Traded to Cincinnati in May 1958 and sold to the Chicago White Sox a month later, the right-hander paired with Jerry Staley to form the American League's top bullpen duo, leading the league with 15 saves in 1959 as the "Go-Go" Sox won their first pennant in 40 years. Lown didn't allow a run in three appearances that October as Chicago fell to the Dodgers in the World Series. This 1960 card catches him the following year, still anchoring the White Sox bullpen. Nicknamed for his boyhood fondness for turkey, Lown pitched his final major-league game in 1962 and settled back in Pueblo, Colorado, working as a mail carrier.
