The players on this card
Tom Ferrick, Luke Appling, and Billy Hitchcock formed Detroit's coaching staff under manager Jimmy Dykes to open the 1960 season. Ferrick, a relief pitcher for five American League clubs from 1941 to 1952, won Game 3 of the 1950 World Series for the Yankees before turning to coaching; he joined the Tigers as pitching coach in 1960. Appling, nicknamed "Old Aches and Pains" for his running litany of minor injuries, spent 20 seasons as the White Sox's shortstop, won two AL batting titles, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1964. Hitchcock broke in with Detroit as a rookie infielder in 1942 and returned in 1955 as the Tigers' third-base coach. When the club made the only manager-for-manager trade in major-league history on August 3, 1960, sending Dykes to Cleveland for Joe Gordon in a deal that also sent Appling to the Indians, Hitchcock managed the Tigers for one game, a 12-2 win over the Yankees, while Gordon was en route to Detroit.
