About Don Drysdale

Donald Scott Drysdale, born July 23, 1936, in Van Nuys, California, signed with Brooklyn out of Van Nuys High School and reached the majors on April 17, 1956, after brief minor-league stops at Bakersfield and Montreal. He spent his entire 14-year career with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, teaming with Sandy Koufax to form one of the game's most fearsome rotations. A relentless sidearming intimidator nicknamed "Big D," he pitched inside without apology, setting the modern NL record with 154 career hit batsmen. In 1962 he went 25-9 with a league-leading 232 strikeouts to win the Cy Young Award, and in 1968 he threw a record six straight shutouts across 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. He won three World Series with the Dodgers (1959, 1963, 1965), beat the Yankees in Game 3 at Dodger Stadium in 1963, and finished 209-166 with a 2.95 ERA and 2,486 strikeouts before a torn rotator cuff ended his career in 1969. His 1960 Topps cards fall in the short-printed high-number series: the base card (#475) and a Sport Magazine '60 All-Star Selection subset card (#570), issued in the season he claimed his second straight NL strikeout crown. Drysdale was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1984, the same year the Dodgers retired his No. 53.
