1960 Topps #474 Haywood Sullivan

About Haywood Sullivan
Haywood Sullivan's 1960 Topps card (#474) catches him in a Boston Red Sox uniform during the only season he played more than a handful of games in the majors. A 6-foot-4 catcher from the University of Florida, where he was an All-SEC quarterback, Sullivan signed with the Red Sox for a $75,000 bonus in 1952, then lost two seasons to military service and a third to back surgery, spending most of the decade in the minors. He finally won a big-league job in 1960, starting Boston's season opener before a hand injury and a .161 average pushed him into a backup role behind newly acquired Russ Nixon. Left exposed in the 1960 expansion draft, he was picked by the new Washington Senators and immediately traded to the Kansas City Athletics, where he caught semi-regularly through 1963 and managed the club for part of 1965. Sullivan's larger legacy came later as Red Sox general manager and co-owner from 1978 to 1993, building the near-pennant 1978 team and earning a place in the club's Hall of Fame.
