1960 Topps #473 Al Cicotte

About Al Cicotte
Al Cicotte's 1960 Topps card, #473, catches him with the Cleveland Indians, who acquired him from Detroit in a November 1958 trade that also brought Billy Martin to Cleveland. A hard-throwing right-hander from Melvindale, Michigan, Cicotte signed with the Yankees in 1948 and spent nearly a decade riding buses and Air Force rosters before debuting in 1957. He pitched for New York, Washington, Detroit and Cleveland through 1959, then was sold to Triple-A Toronto, where he had his finest season: an International League Triple Crown (16-7, 1.79 ERA, 158 strikeouts) capped by an 11-inning no-hitter against Montreal on September 3, 1960, earning him circuit MVP and Topps' Minor League Player of the Year. He closed his career with St. Louis (1961) and Houston's expansion Colt .45s (1962), finishing 10-13, 4.36 over five seasons. Teammates nicknamed him "Bozo" for his fondness of Bozo the Clown ice cream. A great-nephew of banned 1919 Black Sox pitcher Eddie Cicotte, he later ran an insurance agency and died in 1982 at age 52.
