About Al Dark

Alvin Ralph Dark starred in three sports at LSU before signing with the Boston Braves in 1946 for a $50,000 bonus. After one minor-league season, he broke into Boston's lineup in 1948, batting .322 to win National League Rookie of the Year and help the Braves to the pennant. Traded to the New York Giants in 1950, Dark became team captain under Leo Durocher, made three All-Star teams, and topped .400 in both the 1951 and 1954 World Series, the latter a sweep of Cleveland. He later played for the Cardinals and Cubs before a January 1960 trade sent him to the Phillies — the club shown on this card — along with John Buzhardt and Jim Woods for Richie Ashburn. Dark played third base in Philadelphia before a June deal moved him to the Milwaukee Braves, closing out a 14-year career with 2,089 hits and a .289 average. He turned to managing, guiding San Francisco to the 1962 pennant — earning the nickname "the Swamp Fox" that October for having the Candlestick Park infield soaked to slow Dodgers base-stealer Maury Wills — and Oakland to the 1974 World Series title. He is not in the Hall of Fame.
