About Ned Garver

Ned Garver grew up on a horse-drawn wheat farm in Ney, Ohio, dreaming of the Tigers before the St. Louis Browns signed him in 1944. He broke into the majors in 1948 and became the Browns' Opening Day starter four straight years, once outdueling Bob Feller in 1949. His signature season came in 1951: Garver went 20-12 for a Browns club that lost 102 games, one of only two pitchers since 1901 to win 20 for a 100-loss team. Casey Stengel tapped him to start that year's All-Star Game, and Garver finished runner-up for AL MVP in one of the closest votes in history, edged 184-157 by Yogi Berra. A pinched vertebra in 1952 sent him to Detroit and reshaped his pitching style, but he kept working the corners for another decade. By the time this 1960 Topps card caught him with the Kansas City Athletics, Garver was in his fourth season with the club, still getting outs on guile after two more stops. He retired in 1961 with a 129-157 record, then returned to Ney to farm and serve as the town's mayor.
