About this card

Cards #455-470 are the coaches subset, unique to 1960 - each card stacks three or four of a club's coaches on a single front, a format Topps never repeated.

The players on this card

The 1960 Washington Senators coaching staff, under manager Cookie Lavagetto, included three former big-leaguers with long backgrounds in the game. Bob Swift caught for the Browns, Athletics and Tigers from 1940-53 and was part of Detroit's 1945 World Series championship club; he is remembered as Detroit's catcher receiving pitches when the Browns sent Eddie Gaedel up to pinch-hit in 1951, one of baseball's most famous stunts. Swift coached for Washington in 1960 before rejoining the Tigers organization. Ellis Clary played infield for the Senators and St. Louis Browns in the 1940s, appearing in the 1944 World Series for the pennant-winning Browns, then served as Washington's third-base coach for six seasons (1955-60). Sam Mele, a strong-hitting right fielder who drove in 86 and 94 runs for Washington in 1950-51 and led the AL with 36 doubles in 1951, joined the Senators' coaching staff in July 1959 and remained through 1960, later managing the Twins to the 1965 American League pennant.
