About Lou Johnson
Louis Brown Johnson was born September 22, 1934, in Lexington, Kentucky, and signed with the New York Yankees organization out of Kentucky State University in 1953. After seven seasons in the minors, he made the Chicago Cubs' roster in 1960 and debuted that April, playing 34 games in the outfield — the season pictured on his Topps rookie card, card #476, a recognized rookie issue. Johnson bounced through the Angels, Braves, and the minors before a broken ankle to Tommy Davis brought him up from Triple-A Spokane in May 1965, giving him his foothold with the Los Angeles Dodgers. He picked up the nickname "Sweet Lou" that year for his infectious smile and habit of clapping his hands running the bases. Johnson anchored the pennant-winning 1965 Dodgers, scored their only run and delivered their only hit in Sandy Koufax's September 9 perfect game, then homered to win Game 7 of the 1965 World Series. He played two more full seasons in Los Angeles before finishing his career in 1969 with the Cubs, Indians, and Angels, retiring with a .258 average, 48 home runs, and 232 RBI over eight big-league seasons.
