About Don Ferrarese
Donald Hugh Ferrarese, a 5-foot-9 left-hander nicknamed "Midget" for his small stature, broke into pro ball with the Phillies' Class C Stockton club in 1948 and starred for his hometown Oakland Oaks of the Pacific Coast League, winning 18 games in 1954, before Korean War service cost him the 1951 and 1952 seasons. He debuted with Baltimore in 1955 and worked as both starter and reliever over an eight-year career with the Orioles, Indians, White Sox, Phillies and Cardinals, finishing 19-36 with a 4.00 ERA and 350 strikeouts. Highlights included a near no-hitter broken up by Andy Carey's ninth-inning single in 1956, a strikeout of Mickey Mantle, and catching Dwight Eisenhower's ceremonial ten-millionth baseball in 1957. On May 26, 1959, he rapped three straight doubles in one game, joining Walter Johnson and Babe Ruth as the only American League pitchers to do it. Chicago acquired him in the December 1959 trade that sent Norm Cash to Cleveland, and his brief 1960 White Sox stint appears on Topps card #477.
