About Earl Torgeson
Clifford Earl Torgeson broke into pro ball with Seattle of the Pacific Coast League after Army service in World War II, then reached the majors with the Boston Braves in 1947. A tall, bespectacled left-handed first baseman, he played 15 seasons with the Braves, Phillies, Tigers, White Sox, and Yankees, batting .265 with 149 home runs. He led the National League with 120 runs scored in 1950 and topped American League first basemen with a .999 fielding percentage in 1957, while also swiping bases at an unusual rate for the position. Nicknamed "The Earl of Snohomish" after fellow Snohomish, Washington native and Hall of Famer Earl Averill, Torgeson was equally known for his temper — in 1950, after Pirates pitcher Cliff Chambers broke his rib with a pitch and buzzed his head the next day, Torgeson removed his glasses and charged the mound, playing out the season with the fractured rib. His 1960 Topps card catches him mid-tenure with the pennant-winning White Sox; he closed his career in 1961 as a Yankees coach and World Series champion.
