1960 Topps #298 George Witt

About George Witt
George Witt's 1960 Topps card, #298, shows him with the Pittsburgh Pirates during their World Series championship season. Born George Adrian Witt in Long Beach, California, the red-haired right-hander — nicknamed "Red" — signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1950, served in the Marine Corps, and was drafted by Pittsburgh after the 1954 season. He won 18 games for the Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League in 1957, then debuted with the Pirates that September. His best year came in 1958: a 9-2 record and a league-leading 1.61 ERA that helped Pittsburgh to its first winning season in a decade. A sore elbow limited him to an 0-7 mark in 1959, and he split 1960 between the minors and the Pirates' pennant-winning roster. In the World Series against the Yankees, Witt worked three scoreless relief appearances despite inheriting four runners who scored, earning a championship ring. He closed his six-year career (1957-62, also with the Angels and Colt .45s) at 11-16, 4.32 ERA, then taught science and coached baseball at Tustin High School in California.
