About Reno Bertoia
Born Pierino Peter Bertoia in San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy, he moved to Windsor, Ontario as a small child and signed with the hometown Detroit Tigers in 1953, one of baseball's original bonus babies, debuting at 18 as an infielder against Satchel Paige in Paige's final big-league win. Bertoia roomed with Al Kaline for five seasons and in 1957 hit .398 in mid-May, topping American League third basemen in All-Star voting. On December 6, 1958, Detroit traded him to the Washington Senators — the club on this 1960 Topps card — with Jim Delsing and Ron Samford for Eddie Yost, Rocky Bridges, and Neil Chrisley. He opened 1959 hitting .370, then posted career highs in games, hits, doubles, triples, and RBIs for Washington in 1960, playing alongside fellow bonus baby Harmon Killebrew. Bertoia closed a ten-year career with the Senators/Twins, Athletics, and Tigers at .244 with 27 home runs, then taught social studies in Windsor for three decades and entered the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1988.
