About Ernie Banks
Ernie Banks broke in with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League in 1950, then signed with the Chicago Cubs in September 1953, becoming the franchise's first Black player. Manning shortstop through 1961 and first base from 1962 to 1971, he set what was then a home run record for shortstops with 44 in 1955 and became the first National League player to win back-to-back MVP awards, taking the honor in 1958 and 1959 while leading the league in RBI both seasons. He added a Gold Glove in 1960 and made 14 All-Star teams. On May 12, 1970, he became the ninth player in major league history to reach 500 home runs, finishing his career with 512, all as a Cub. Nicknamed "Mr. Cub" for his devotion to the team, and famous for his sunny refrain "Let's play two," Banks never reached a World Series despite the individual honors. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977, his first year of eligibility. Card No. 10 catches him fresh off those two MVP seasons, while No. 560 places him in the short-printed Sport Magazine All-Star subset of the scarce 1960 Topps high-number series.
