About Gordy Coleman

Gordon Calvin Coleman signed with Cleveland as an amateur free agent in 1953, then lost two seasons to Army service before winning the Triple Crown at Double-A Mobile in 1959 — .353, 30 homers, 110 RBI — as Southern Association MVP. Cincinnati acquired him that December with Billy Martin and Cal McLish for Johnny Temple, and the left-handed-hitting first baseman took over the job after a July 1960 call-up, pushing Frank Robinson back to the outfield — the rookie season pictured on his 1960 Topps card, #257. Coleman anchored first base for the pennant-winning 1961 Reds, batting .287 with 26 homers and a career-high 87 RBI, then homered off Ralph Terry for Cincinnati's only win in that year's World Series loss to the Yankees. He set his career high with 28 homers in 1962, then shared first base with Deron Johnson and Tony Pérez as injuries mounted; in 1966 he led the majors hitting .368 as a pinch-hitter. Over nine seasons he batted .273 with 98 homers and 387 RBI, and in 1972 was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
