1960 Topps #258 Dick Groat

About Dick Groat
Richard Morrow Groat was born November 4, 1930, in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, and grew up in nearby Swissvale. A two-sport star at Duke University, he was twice a basketball All-American, was named national Player of the Year in 1951-52, and also starred at shortstop, hitting .370 to help the Blue Devils reach their first College World Series in 1952. Pirates general manager Branch Rickey signed him that June for a bonus reported between $35,000 and $40,000, and Groat went straight to Pittsburgh without playing a single minor-league game, debuting on June 18, 1952. After a season of pro basketball with the Fort Wayne Pistons and an Army hitch, he returned to shortstop, pairing with Bill Mazeroski from 1956 to 1962 to anchor one of baseball's most efficient double-play combinations. This 1960 Topps card catches Groat in his signature season: he won the National League batting title at .325, was voted NL Most Valuable Player, and helped Pittsburgh upset the Yankees in the World Series. An eight-time All-Star, he added a second championship ring with the 1964 Cardinals and closed out a 14-year career with 2,138 hits.
