About George Altman
George Altman broke into pro ball with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League in 1955, signing with the Chicago Cubs that August on Buck O'Neil's recommendation. After two years in the minors and two in the Army, the 6-foot-4 outfielder debuted in 1959, going 2-for-3 against Don Drysdale on Opening Day and earning the Chicago writers' Cubs rookie-of-the-year nod. This 1960 Topps card catches him in a sophomore season slowed by an ankle injury and mononucleosis, though his power ticked up. Altman broke through in 1961, batting .303 with 27 home runs and a league-leading 12 triples, making the first of three All-Star selections and homering in his first All-Star at-bat at Candlestick Park. A .318 follow-up in 1962 preceded a trade to St. Louis for pitchers Larry Jackson and Lindy McDaniel. After stints with the Cardinals, Mets and a return to the Cubs, he closed a nine-year, 101-homer major league career and starred for eight more seasons in Japan, hitting 205 home runs for the Orions and Tigers.
