Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Hoyt Wilhelm
Hoyt Wilhelm signed his first pro contract with the Mooresville Moors of the Class D North Carolina State League in 1942, having taught himself a knuckleball in high school after studying a photo of Washington's Dutch Leonard gripping the ball. He then spent three years in the Army during World War II, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge and earning a Purple Heart for wounds that left him carrying shrapnel in his back for the rest of his career; his rise to staff sergeant earned him the nickname "Old Sarge." After six minor-league seasons, Wilhelm reached the majors at age 29 with the 1952 New York Giants, led the NL in ERA as a rookie reliever, and helped the club sweep the 1954 World Series. Dealt to Baltimore in 1958, he no-hit the Yankees that September 20 in his first career start for the Orioles, and spent five seasons in Baltimore's bullpen, shown here on card #395. Wilhelm pitched until age 49, retiring with a 2.52 ERA, 228 saves, and the major-league record for relief wins. An 8-time All-Star, he became the first relief pitcher elected to the Hall of Fame, in 1985.
