About J.C. Martin
Joseph Clifton Martin — called J.C. from childhood to avoid confusion with two grandfathers both named Joseph — signed with the White Sox out of Ridgeway High School in Virginia for a $4,000 bonus and broke in as a first baseman in the Nebraska State League. He debuted with Chicago on September 10, 1959, too late for that year's pennant-winning World Series roster, then made the 1961 Topps All-Star Rookie Team while splitting time at first and third. Converted to catcher in 1962 under Al López and former big-league receiver Les Moss, he became the White Sox' regular backstop through the 1967 pennant race, catching Joe Horlen's no-hitter that September. Traded to the Mets, he was part of the 1969 World Series champions and is remembered for Game Four, when Pete Richert's errant throw struck his wrist on a bunt play and let the winning run score — a disputed finish that led baseball to add the first-base running lane. He finished his career with the Cubs in 1972. His 1960 Topps #346 is a recognized rookie card, though its photo is actually teammate Gary Peters — swapped with Peters' own card, #407, and never corrected.
