About Don Newcombe

Don Newcombe broke into pro ball in 1944 with the Negro National League's Newark Eagles, then paired with catcher Roy Campanella on the 1946 Nashua Dodgers, one of the first integrated teams of the century, before reaching Brooklyn on May 20, 1949 — only the third Black pitcher in major-league history. He won National League Rookie of the Year that season and started a World Series game, a first for a Black pitcher. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right-hander, nicknamed "Newk" for his surname and his size on the mound, went 20-5 to help Brooklyn win its only Brooklyn-era championship in 1955, then turned in a career year in 1956 — 27-7, NL MVP, and the first-ever Cy Young Award — becoming the first pitcher ever to win Rookie of the Year, MVP, and Cy Young. Card #345 in the 1960 Topps set catches him with Cincinnati, the team he'd joined in a 1958 trade and would leave for Cleveland midway through this, his final big-league season. Never elected to Cooperstown, Newcombe later spent decades as the Dodgers' community-relations director, touring the country warning youth about the alcoholism that had derailed his own playing days.
