1960 Topps #344 Clint Courtney

About Clint Courtney
Clint Courtney was a World War II Army veteran signed by the Yankees as a catcher in 1947, teaching himself to throw right-handed for the switch from the outfield while still batting left. After a brief 1951 call-up, New York traded him to the St. Louis Browns that November at manager Rogers Hornsby's urging, and the move paid off: Courtney hit .286 in 1952 and won The Sporting News American League Rookie of the Year. That same spring he earned the nickname "Scrap Iron" after tumbling in a footrace with a sportswriter, slicing himself up on glass and rocks, then playing the next exhibition game bandaged rather than sit out — he was also likely the first big-league catcher to wear eyeglasses behind the plate. Courtney caught for the Browns/Orioles through 1954 and briefly for the White Sox before settling in as Washington's primary catcher from 1955-1959, a career-high 134 games in 1958 among them — the Senators years pictured on this 1960 Topps card. He later managed in the Braves' system and nearly landed Atlanta's job in 1974, before dying of a heart attack in 1975 at 48.
