About Sandy Koufax

Sandy Koufax, born Sanford Braun on December 30, 1935, signed with the Dodgers in 1954 at 19. The bonus rule kept him off the minors; he debuted for Brooklyn on June 24, 1955, and pitched 12 seasons for the Dodgers through 1966. Wildness held him back under manager Walter Alston for six years until a mechanical fix before 1961 turned him into the league's most dominant arm. He led the NL in ERA five straight years (1962-1966), won three pitching Triple Crowns, and became the first three-time Cy Young winner, unanimously each time. He won the 1963 NL MVP, threw four no-hitters including a 1965 perfect game, and took World Series MVP twice, leading the Dodgers to titles in 1963 and 1965. Sitting out Game 1 of the 1965 Series for Yom Kippur made him a revered Jewish sports figure; his 1966 holdout with Don Drysdale was a landmark labor stand. Dubbed "the Left Arm of God" for that run, he retired at 30 with a damaged elbow, finishing with 2,396 strikeouts and a 2.76 ERA. Koufax entered the Hall of Fame in 1972, the youngest inductee ever. His 1960 base card (#343) catches him a year before the breakout, still working through control issues and one adjustment from stardom.
