1960 Topps #502 Jim Bunning

About Jim Bunning
Jim Bunning broke in with the Detroit Tigers on July 20, 1955, after Tigers scout Bruce Connatser signed him out of Xavier University in 1949 and five hard seasons in the low minors. His breakout came in 1957, when he led the American League in wins (20) and innings pitched and started the All-Star Game, one of nine All-Star selections in his career. On July 20, 1958, he no-hit the Red Sox for Detroit. Traded to Philadelphia after the 1963 season, Bunning delivered the signature moment of his career on Father's Day, June 21, 1964, throwing a perfect game against the Mets at Shea Stadium, the National League's first since 1880 and only the seventh in major-league history. He later pitched for Pittsburgh and the Dodgers before finishing his career back with Philadelphia in 1971, retiring with 224 wins, a 3.27 ERA and 2,855 strikeouts, second on the all-time list. The Phillies retired his No. 14 in 2001, and the Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1996. This 1960 Topps card, #502, catches him mid-career with Detroit, before the trade to Philadelphia. Bunning later served in the U.S. House and Senate, the only man elected to both Congress and Cooperstown.
