About Don Lee

Don Lee was baseball's answer to a family trivia question: the son of longtime White Sox left-hander Thornton Lee, he pitched nine big-league seasons and became half of the only father-son duo ever both taken deep by Ted Williams. On September 2, 1960, pitching for Washington, Lee surrendered a homer to Williams — 21 years to the month after Williams, in his rookie year, hit one off Thornton with the 1939 White Sox. A right-hander out of the University of Arizona, Lee signed with Detroit in 1956, debuted in 1957, and was dealt to the Senators, where he spent parts of three seasons (1960-1962) as a swingman working both the rotation and bullpen. He later moved with the franchise to Minnesota, then pitched for the Angels, Astros and Cubs, finishing 40-44 with a 3.61 ERA. His 1960 Topps card catches him in a Washington uniform the same year he yielded that historic Williams blast.
