About Seth Morehead

Seth Marvin Morehead, a hard-throwing left-hander from Shreveport, Louisiana's C.E. Byrd High School, was rated the best prep pitcher in the state before signing with the Philadelphia Phillies for a $50,000 bonus in 1952. Cincinnati manager Birdie Tebbetts later called him the NL's best young lefty and a future 25-game winner. Morehead debuted with the Phillies in 1957, and his first big-league win — a 2-1 four-hitter in which he retired the last 13 batters he faced — came against the Dodgers in Brooklyn's final game as a franchise; he was also the last pitcher to face Roy Campanella before Campanella's career-ending accident. Traded to the Cubs in May 1959, Morehead appears with Chicago on his 1960 Topps #504, the season he rebuilt his career from the bullpen, going 2-4, 2.80 with a 16-inning scoreless streak. The Braves acquired him in 1961 for his final big-league season. He finished 5-19, 4.81 in 132 games, then earned a Baylor degree and spent 36 years in banking before his 2006 death in Shreveport.
