1960 Topps #499 Johnny James

About Johnny James
John Phillip James signed with the Yankees out of USC in 1953 and spent years working his way up New York's farm system, first as a starter and then, from 1955, as a reliever. The right-hander made his major-league debut on September 6, 1958, throwing three scoreless innings in relief against Washington. After missing all of 1959, James won a bullpen job in 1960 after a spring-training no-hitter, going 5-1 with two saves in 28 games for a Yankees club that captured its tenth pennant in twelve years before falling to Pittsburgh in the Mazeroski World Series. His 1960 Topps card, #499 as a Yankee, is recognized as his rookie issue. James pitched once more for New York in 1961 before being traded, with Ryne Duren, to the expansion Los Angeles Angels for Bob Cerv and Tex Clevenger; that season he surrendered the 20th home run of Roger Maris's 61-homer campaign. He closed his three-year, 66-game career after 1961 with a 5-3 record and 4.76 ERA.
