About Johnny Temple

Johnny Temple signed with the Reds for $150 a month after a 1948 tryout camp in Mooresville, North Carolina, then hit .400 for Class C Ogden in 1949 before shortstop Roy McMillan's presence at Tulsa pushed him to second base. He debuted with Cincinnati in 1952 and spent eight seasons as the club's leadoff hitter, teaming with McMillan for one of the National League's best double-play combinations of the 1950s. A six-time All-Star, Temple hit .300 or better three times with the Reds and drew almost twice as many walks as strikeouts (648 to 338) in his career. His best season came in 1959 - career highs of .311, 186 hits and 102 runs - and that December he was traded to Cleveland for Billy Martin, Gordy Coleman and Cal McLish, the swap pictured on his 1960 Topps card as an Indian. He later played for Baltimore and Houston, finished with 1,484 hits and a .284 average, and was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 1965.
