Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.
About Johnny Powers
John Calvin Powers broke into pro ball in 1949 out of Birmingham, Alabama, and built a decade-long reputation as one of the minor leagues' most dangerous sluggers, twice blasting 39 home runs in a season — a Big State League-leading mark for the Class B Waco Pirates in 1950, matched again for the Double-A New Orleans Pelicans in 1956 — on his way to 298 career minor-league homers. That power rarely showed up in the big leagues: after debuting with Pittsburgh in 1955, the left-handed-hitting outfielder batted .195 with 6 home runs over parts of six seasons for the Pirates, Reds, Orioles, and Indians. The Reds sold him to Baltimore on December 15, 1959, and Powers opened the 1960 season as the Orioles' starting right fielder — but hit .111 in ten games before Baltimore waived him, and Cleveland claimed him off waivers on May 12. His high-number Orioles card, #422 in the 1960 Topps set, is a Series 5 issue with both white and gray card-stock backs; white is the tougher find.
