1960 Topps #421 Duke Maas

New York Yankees · American League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #421 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Duke Maas

Duane Frederick "Duke" Maas broke in with the Detroit Tigers in 1955, endured an 0-7 season in 1956, then rebounded with 10 wins in 1957. That June, he and Virgil Trucks were traded to the New York Yankees for Bob Grim and Harry "Suitcase" Simpson, and it paid off fast — Maas went 7-3 down the stretch as New York won the 1958 pennant, picking up the pennant-clinching win, then worked an inning of relief in that fall's World Series victory over Milwaukee. His best year came in 1959: 14-8 in 21 starts. He added two innings of relief in the 1960 World Series against Pittsburgh before arm arthritis ended his career; the expansion Los Angeles Angels drafted him in 1961, but he never played for them, finishing instead with the Yankees. He'd gone by Duke since boyhood, disliking his given name, Duane. His 1960 Topps card, #421, pictures him with the Yankees from the scarce high-number series five, printed on white or gray stock, with white backs the tougher find.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
