1960 Topps #420 Ed Mathews
Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About Ed Mathews
Eddie Mathews signed with the Boston Braves out of Santa Barbara High School in 1949 and broke into the majors as a 20-year-old third baseman in 1952. When the franchise moved to Milwaukee in 1953, he exploded for 47 home runs, the first of nine straight 30-homer seasons and the first of two NL home run titles, in 1953 and 1959, finishing MVP runner-up both years. A left-handed slugger whose swing Ty Cobb called among the most perfect he'd ever seen, Mathews made 12 All-Star teams and starred in the Braves' 1957 championship run, hitting a 10th-inning walk-off homer in Game Four of the World Series and fielding the Series-ending grounder in Game Seven. From 1954 to 1966 he and Hank Aaron combined for 863 home runs, a record teammate total at the time. Mathews finished his 17-year career with 512 homers, remains the only man to play for the Braves in Boston, Milwaukee, and Atlanta, and won a second title with the 1968 Tigers. He entered the Hall of Fame in 1978. This 1960 Topps card, #420, shows him with the Milwaukee Braves and was issued on Series 5 stock, found with either a white or the scarcer gray back.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
