1960 Topps #419 George Crowe

St. Louis Cardinals · National League · Base set · Series 5 · Card #419 of 572
White / gray back

Cards #375-440 were printed on two back stocks, white and gray. White is the scarcer of the two, and the difference is the tint of the cardboard on the reverse — it is a stock variation, not a design change, so both backs read identically.

About George Crowe

George Daniel Crowe broke into pro ball in 1947 with the Negro National League's New York Black Yankees. Newark Eagles owner Effa Manley recommended him to the Boston Braves, who signed him in 1949 at age 28. The left-handed first baseman tore through the high minors — Eastern League MVP at Hartford in 1950, then a unanimous American Association all-star and the league's top rookie at Milwaukee in 1951 — before reaching the majors in 1952. Over parts of ten seasons with the Braves (1952-53, 1955), Redlegs (1956-58) and Cardinals (1959-61), he hit 31 home runs in 1957 filling in for an injured Ted Kluszewski and made the 1958 All-Star team. Teammates called him "Big Daddy" — Vada Pinson recalled Crowe telling him, "I'm your father, your big daddy up here" — for mentoring younger Black players, including Bob Gibson. In St. Louis, Crowe became Stan Musial's caddy off the bench, setting a then-record 14 career pinch-hit homers. Card #419 catches him in that late-career role; it comes with white or gray card stock, a Series 5 quirk, with white the tougher find.

Graded population — a scarcity guide, not a price. Snapshot 2026-08-20. Half grades fold down for both graders (8.5→8); PSA qualified slabs (OC, ST, PD, MC and the like) are not counted. Neither grader separates the white and gray back stocks on this card, so the counts below cover both. The Venezuelan issue, the 1960 Topps Tattoos and Bazooka are separate products and are not counted here.
